My research is inherently interdisciplinary and requires a team-science approach. I have been successful at developing a strong team of social, behavioral, and biomedical scientists across multiple institutions to complete my work. A long-standing collaborator has been with Dr. Cynthia Berg, a lifespan developmental psychologist at the University of Utah. To facilitate successful collaborations across multiple sites, and to make progress on publishing our work, we have held semi-annual “writing retreats” where investigators of our collaborative team, post-docs and graduate students from universities across multiple states meet for several days to analyze data and write manuscripts. This generates a deep understanding of our findings, solidifies team relationships, allows students to build professional networks, and provides a fun alternative to the often solitary experience of scientific writing.
